Review of ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’: A Daring and Exceptional Expansion to the Avatar Universe

Avatar: Seven Havens Redefines the Franchise

2026 has marked a significant year for the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, with Netflix’s live-action adaptation and the debut film from Avatar Studios, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. However, these offerings tread familiar territory, lacking the freshness fans crave. Netflix’s attempt is a dull retelling of the original, while Avatar Aang revisits well-trodden narratives. In contrast, Avatar: Seven Havens, the newest TV series, boldly reinvents the franchise.

A Bold New Direction

Where The Legend of Korra introduced a modern, industrialized era, Seven Havens thrusts us into a hazardous post-apocalyptic future. The series features stunning visuals with vibrant auroras over vast deserts, striking rock formations, and an innovative synth-heavy soundtrack by composer Jeremy Zuckerman. The world of Avatar has transformed dramatically; the Four Kingdoms have been obliterated in an event known as “the cataclysm,” forcing humanity into fortified cities called Havens.

One such Haven is Ellora, a sprawling metropolis that rivals Ba Sing Se with its impressive walls and a central crystalline fortress.

Meet Pavi, the New Avatar

At the heart of this new world is Pavi, a 9-year-old girl who survives on her own with her companion, a cat monkey named Geet. Pavi is resourceful, having crafted her own prosthetic leg, but she hides a dark secret: she is the Avatar. Instead of celebration, her existence is met with fear—after all, history labels Avatar Korra as the harbinger of the cataclysm, and as such, all Avatars are despised.

Pavi’s journey is fraught with challenges, as she grapples with her role in a world that shuns her kind. The narrative explores the personal ramifications of this status, suggesting deeper complexities beyond the surface.

A Dynamic Sisterhood

The series also introduces Nisha, Pavi’s surprise twin, and their relationship becomes pivotal to the story. Their dynamic as youthful adventurers contrasts beautifully with the serious tones of their guardians, Commander Karthik and airbending soldier Jae. Challenges abound as the two girls navigate their newfound sisterhood amidst societal dysfunction and external threats from bandit factions known as the Faceless.

Despite being the youngest Avatar we’ve encountered, Pavi retains the blend of levity and gravity characteristic of Avatar’s beloved narratives. She embodies a blend of Aang’s playful spirit and Korra’s fierce determination, while Nisha embraces a more aggressive, warrior-like persona.

Conclusion: A Fresh Take on an Iconic Universe

Avatar: Seven Havens successfully recaptures the magic of The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, seamlessly blending compelling character dynamics, thrilling bending action, and an imaginative setting reminiscent of both Mad Max and Jean “Mœbius” Giraud’s artistic vision. As the series unfolds, it promises to explore themes of connection and resilience against overwhelming odds—reflecting the franchise’s ability to evolve while retaining its core essence.

The first three episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens are now streaming on Paramount+, with new episodes premiering every Friday through October 30.
