Research indicates that a Rosie’s-style gaming venue could boost the economy of Amherst County.

Amherst County voters will decide in November whether to permit pari-mutuel betting at satellite facilities. Supporters, like Ryan Saylor from Commonwealth Wins, argue this could create jobs and generate significant tax revenue, with an economic impact study suggesting $1.9 million in tax revenue and 83 direct jobs. However, opponents, including Tobey Thurston from Respect the Vote, express concerns over potential social costs, claiming the revenue comes from people losing money at slots and fearing changes to the community’s character. The previous attempt to introduce this measure in 2021 failed. Economic Development Director Lori Saunders argues the potential benefits could enhance the county’s budget for essential services. The debate continues as the decision lies with local voters.
