PS5’s QSSR AI Upscaling: A Potential Challenge for Older Games
PlayStation’s new AI upscaling technology, QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), may face challenges when applied to games built on older SDKs (Software Development Kits).
What is QSSR?
Announced through a collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst, QSSR represents an evolution of the previous PSSR (Precision Spectral Super Resolution) technology. It aims to enhance game fidelity and frame rates on the PS5. However, there are concerns that this new technology could be incompatible with some existing games on the console.
Compatibility Issues with Older SDKs
In a recent Digital Foundry Q&A session, various third-party games were discussed regarding their potential benefit from the QSSR technology. Games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Control Resonant, 007 First Light, Crimson Desert, and Alan Wake 2 were highlighted as strong candidates for QSSR enhancement.
However, a key point raised was that if QSSR does not function with older SDKs, developers may need to update their games to compatible versions, which could pose a significant challenge. Richard Leadbetter mentioned that while provisions for PSSR allowed it to run on older games, QSSR lacks a centralized library for easy updates, thereby making it difficult to implement.
