Anne Carson, the acclaimed Canadian poet and essayist, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy honored her for her “bold and inventive oeuvre” that creatively engages with the classical tradition, producing new forms for contemporary literature. Carson becomes the 19th woman to receive this prestigious award.

Among her notable works are “Autobiography of Red,” “Red Doc>,” and “Eros the Bittersweet.” Her poetry collections include “Glass, Irony, and God” and “The Beauty of the Husband,” which won the T.S. Eliot Prize. Carson is also recognized for her poignant elegy “Nox” and her translation of Sappho.

Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel Committee, praised Carson for her unique blend of philological precision and poetic exploration. He highlighted her collaborations across various artistic fields, which enrich her writing’s performative aspects.

Fellow committee member Steve Sem-Sandberg described Carson as “an author for our time,” uniquely reviving antiquity in a modern context. He emphasized the energy derived from her interplay between old myths and contemporary themes.

Upon receiving the news, Carson, who was at her seaside home in Iceland, expressed surprise and reflected on how she might allocate the prize money. She intends to celebrate with a walk in nature and some quiet time away from her phone.
