Xbox Expands into Entertainment with New Division XP
Despite facing revenue losses and restructuring challenges over the past year, Microsoft’s gaming division, Xbox, recently announced a major expansion into the entertainment industry. The launch of a new division called XP aims to broaden Xbox’s brand through movies, TV shows, merchandise, and live events.
Recent Successes and Future Plans
Capitalizing on the successful adaptations of Minecraft and Fallout, Xbox is looking to create more content based on its extensive catalog of games. Currently, only a handful of titles, including Halo, have seen adaptations, but upcoming projects include movies for Call of Duty and Gears of War, as well as a Netflix animated series for Diablo.
Matthew Ball, Xbox’s Chief Strategy Officer, expressed the company’s ambition to become the leading entertainment company globally.
Structure of XP
The XP division will comprise four key departments:
- Xbox Pictures – Focused on creating film and TV adaptations.
- Xbox Products – Concentrating on licensing and merchandise development.
- Xbox Places – Organizing live events and broadcasts in various venues.
- Xbox Partnerships – Collaborating with creators and brands for new experiences.
Kayleen Walters, known for her role as executive producer of A Minecraft Movie, has been named president of XP. Walters previously spent over a decade at Lucasfilm managing marketing campaigns for the Star Wars franchise.
Leadership Changes
Additionally, Maria Angelidou-Smith, a former executive at Meta and Reddit, has been appointed CEO of Mojang and the Minecraft franchise.
Analyst Perspective
Analysts, including streaming media expert Dan Rayburn, believe this move is a strategic response to the challenges faced by Xbox. Expanding into the entertainment sector allows Xbox to tap into new audiences and create additional revenue streams. Rayburn highlighted that while the company may not resonate with all gaming franchises outside their core audience, selecting the right content for adaptation is crucial.
In summary, with its XP division, Xbox aims to leverage its gaming brand, creating a new ecosystem of entertainment experiences while navigating recent challenges in the gaming market.
