Hurricane Isaias Could Stir Up Storms in Central Florida

Hurricane Preparedness: Keeping Pets Safe

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane Isaias is not expected to impact Central Florida directly, but it may bring fast-moving showers and isolated storms to the region.

As the storm approaches the northern Gulf Coast, animal advocates urge families to include pets in their hurricane and severe weather plans. Here are some essential tips for pet owners:

  • Bring Pets Indoors: PETA recommends that pets be brought inside well before conditions worsen. They should never be left tied, penned, or crated outside during severe weather.

  • Evacuation Plans: If you need to evacuate, take your pets with you. Research which shelters or hotels accept animals in advance.

  • Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit for your pets, including:

    • At least one week of food
    • Water and food bowls
    • Necessary medications
    • Veterinary and vaccination records
    • Secure carriers, leashes, and harnesses
    • Towels, blankets, and familiar toys
    • Current identification tags
  • Microchipping: Ensure your pets are microchipped and that the contact information is current.

  • Animal Safety: If you see an animal in distress, note its location and contact local authorities if it’s not safe to intervene.

While Central Florida may not face direct impacts from Isaias, residents should monitor forecasts for possible showers, storms, or isolated tornadoes.
