Guzman pledges to advocate for legislation on PA skill games

State Representative Manny Guzman Jr. emphasized that efforts to legalize and regulate skill games in Pennsylvania will continue, despite the General Assembly’s failure to achieve consensus before a critical deadline. Speaking to approximately 100 business owners and community representatives at an event at Reverb Club, Guzman expressed his concerns for the financial impact on organizations that depend on revenue from these machines.

The recent ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court classified skill games as slot machines, significantly restricting their legal operation. This has prompted state police to prepare for enforcement actions starting October 14, which could result in the removal and seizure of machines from unlicensed establishments.

Guzman attributed the legislative stalemate to disagreements over taxation rates and the allocation of resultant revenues. He noted that both parties in the General Assembly share responsibility for the impasse, and while he mentioned the possibility of a special legislative session called by Governor Josh Shapiro, it appears unlikely before the November elections.

Business owners shared their concerns about the financial ramifications if the skill games were to be banned, with some stating it could force price increases to offset losses. Guzman reaffirmed his commitment to finding a legislative solution, recognizing the vital role the skill games industry plays for many local businesses throughout Pennsylvania.
