First Cultural Prescribed Burn in Almost 200 Years Conducted on Minnesota Point

The Minnesota DNR, along with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the city of Duluth, conducted a significant cultural prescribed burn on 17 acres of Minnesota Point, marking the first such event in nearly 200 years. This initiative, called Returning the Spirit of Good Fire to Minnesota Point, began with a ceremonial event led by Fond du Lac elders.

Bazile Panek, a project leader from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, emphasized the cultural importance of this practice, stating that fire is viewed as a spiritual connection to the land. The project aims to revive traditional indigenous practices that have been absent from the area for a long time.

Kelly Randall from the Minnesota DNR highlighted the ecological benefits of the burn, noting that the woodland relies on fire for the regeneration of its flora. Organizers expressed hopes for future controlled burns in the area, with a second burn planned for spring.
