The European Union is actively pursuing strategic projects aimed at achieving its goals under the Critical Raw Materials Act. By 2030, the bloc intends to mine a minimum of 10% of its raw material needs, process 40%, and recycle 25%. Additionally, it aims to limit sourcing from any single non-EU country to a maximum of 65% at any processing stage.
In a recent announcement, the EU has added a second batch of strategic projects, building on an earlier list released in March 2025, which included 47 projects, some of which are reportedly behind schedule. The newly added projects will focus on key minerals necessary for meeting future targets, specifically in lithium, nickel, rare earths, magnesium, and tungsten.
The initiative has received over 170 applications from 16 EU member states, indicating broad interest across the region. The “strategic project” label will expedite permitting processes and aid in securing financing, with set deadlines of 27 months for mining and 15 months for processing projects.
Finally, the Commission plans to announce strategic projects in non-EU countries later this year, further expanding its critical raw materials strategy.
