Edisto Plein Air Painting Event Set for October 13-17

Mary Hoffman, a long-time participant in the annual outdoor exhibition, reflects on her experiences since its inception. Despite missing only the 2025 event, she has witnessed significant improvements in exhibition spaces and public enthusiasm, all while the breathtaking scenery of the island continues to draw her back.

Choosing a subject for her artwork, however, presents its own challenges. Hoffman often finds it difficult to select just one beautiful scene from the many available options. Organizers collaborate with property owners to provide painters access to private locations, and Hoffman frequently draws inspiration from local spots such as Botany Bay and Flowers Seafood.

For her, the unpredictable elements of outdoor painting—including changing light, rising tides, and even pesky bugs—are integral to the experience. She believes that although it might be easier to paint from photographs in a comfortable studio, the unique “spirit” of painting en plein air cannot be replicated this way.

Linda Steele, another participant and local resident, shares her passion for painting the marsh in her backyard, especially at low tide when it reveals intricate details. As an art educator, she appreciates the opportunity to learn from both the judges and fellow artists at the event.

The completed works will be showcased at a champagne reception on October 16 at the Edisto Beach Civic Center, where winners will be announced. Tickets are available online or at the door, allowing the public to celebrate the artistry and uniqueness of the island.
