Culturally Guided Controlled Burn Scheduled for Minnesota Point

A prescribed fire is scheduled for Thursday afternoon on Minnesota Point, marking the first cultural burn in over a century. This will happen over a 17-acre area, starting beyond Sky Harbor Airport and the Pump House. A public viewing area will be set up at the Lake Superior Estuarium on Barker’s Island, with optimal viewing expected early in the afternoon.

The burn aims to revive the Ojibwe tradition of periodic fires, promoting red pine regeneration and growth of plants like blueberries. Weather conditions delayed the burn from last spring, but extensive preparations have been made, including the removal of potential fire hazards by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local students.

Kevin Berens, the burn boss, emphasized the importance of fire for the woodland’s ecology and culture, noting that it has been absent for 180 years. A carefully developed burn plan will minimize smoke impact on nearby areas, and trained personnel will manage the burn. Public safety will necessitate temporary closures of certain walking trails.

The initiative is named Zhaagawaamikong-neyaashi Azhenamaw Manidoo-ishkode, meaning “Returning the Spirit of Good Fire to Minnesota Point.” More information can be found on their webpage.
