Celebrating Identity: Arianna Roman’s Journey at Coppin State University

Arianna Roman, a senior English major at Coppin State University, embodies the rich blend of her Black and Puerto Rican heritage, inspiring others through her leadership and creative pursuits.

Leadership and Community Involvement

Hailing from Prince George’s County, Maryland, Roman has made a significant impact during her time at Coppin. She served as Miss Sophomore and Miss Junior on the Royal Court, played goalie for the women’s lacrosse team, and actively engaged in community service, providing support to those in need in Baltimore. Currently, she holds the presidency of both the Epsilon Kappa chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and Latinx UNIDOS, while also serving as the poetry editor for Ma’at’s Feather Literary Magazine.

Her dedication to campus life and community service reflects a deep-rooted confidence in her identity.

Embracing Cultural Heritage

Roman’s connection to her Puerto Rican roots is personal and profound. She speaks passionately about her heritage, saying, “Puerto Rico is such a strong place… the more I learn, the prouder I am.” Her father’s journey from San Juan, facing challenges like generational trauma and racism, has shaped her understanding of resilience and pride. Roman carries forward her family’s legacy and views her identity as a source of strength.

“Being Hispanic or Latino does not mean you are not Black,” she asserts, celebrating her dual identity with pride. For Roman, each aspect of her heritage enhances her individuality rather than diminishes it.

A Vision for the Future

Roman aims to publish her written works post-graduation and hopes to inspire aspiring writers through her journey. Armed with a newfound appreciation for literature, she acknowledges the growing importance of strong critical thinking and writing skills in today’s world, especially as technology evolves.

Reflecting on her educational journey, she says, “I can’t watch movies the same way anymore…,” emphasizing her transformed perspective on storytelling.

Message of Empowerment

As Hispanic Heritage Month approaches, Roman encourages others to embrace their identities fully. “Be who you are and be proud of where you came from and where you are going,” she advises, urging individuals not to let external judgments dictate their self-worth.

Arianna Roman’s story is a testament to the power of embracing one’s multifaceted identity and the strength found in community and culture.
