For some dogs and cats awaiting adoption, a traditional shelter isn’t the right fit. That’s why the Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa is actively seeking individuals willing to care for a pet in their homes until a permanent family is found.

The society operates a foster program designed to house pets outside its shelter at 725 S. 32nd St. Those who participate in this program are not obligated to adopt any pets they take in, and they receive assistance from the society in the form of pet food and kitty litter.

“Almost Home Humane Society can rescue and care for more animals when there are people willing to provide a foster home,” said Becky Nelson-Riley, a board member. “Fostering a dog or cat costs nothing.”

Fostering involves providing temporary care for an animal until a permanent adoptive family is secured. It requires opening your heart and home to help an animal in need, creating a safe and loving environment.

Animals placed in the foster program often include those who struggle in the kennel environment, those with special medical needs, long-term shelter residents, and puppies and kittens up to eight weeks old, according to Ashley Tuttle, the society’s executive director.

Nelson-Riley explained that time in a foster home can aid in an animal’s recovery from physical or emotional trauma and help them learn skills to increase their adoptability. All animals in the foster program remain available for adoption.

To become a foster care provider, interested individuals must complete an application process that includes a background check and an in-home inspection.

For more information and to file an application, visit Almost Home Iowa and navigate to the “foster care” section from the main menu.
