Holiday Air Travel Costs on the Rise
According to a recent report from Hopper, travelers should anticipate higher costs for air travel this holiday season. Roundtrip domestic airfare for Thanksgiving and Christmas has increased by 31% and 23%, respectively, compared to last year (2025). This marks the highest holiday airfare in the past decade.
International Travel May Cost More
If you’re eyeing a trip to Europe or a warm getaway in Latin America, brace yourself for increased airfare. The report indicates that international flights for the 2026 holiday season are pricier than in 2025, particularly to top spots in Europe, Mexico, Central America, and the Antilles.
Hotel Rates Also on the Rise
The average nightly hotel rate for Thanksgiving holds steady at $170, but for Christmas, it has jumped 18% to $197 per night.
Factors Contributing to Increased Airfare
One significant driver behind the elevated holiday-airfare costs is the rise in jet fuel prices, partly attributed to the ongoing Iran War.
Tips to Offset Higher Travel Costs
With prices already at a record high, travelers are advised to book their holiday travel sooner rather than later. Avoiding peak travel days, such as Sunday, November 29, for Thanksgiving and December 18-20 for Christmas, can lead to savings.
Hopper recommends booking your Thanksgiving and Christmas travel by Halloween to secure better rates.
Maximize savings by utilizing travel credit cards, airline miles, and reward points during your booking process. If you don’t already have a travel credit card, consider signing up for one to save money on future travels.
Additionally, opt for flexible, refundable options when booking. This will allow you to adjust your plans without losing your investment if necessary.
