Embracing a More Enriching Lifestyle: The Journey of a Couple Who Exchanged Manhattan for a Quaint Italian Village

Michou Mahtani and Thomas Fuchs, a creative designer couple, made an unconventional move from Manhattan and Miami to a quaint village in southern Italy, specifically Sogliano Cavour in Puglia. Seeking a simpler and more fulfilling existence, they purchased and renovated an 18th-century palazzo, aiming for authenticity and inspiration.

Initially drawn to the allure of Italy during a visit in 2010, they discovered not just stunning landscapes and food, but the rich authenticity of daily life. They spent time exploring various villages before settling on Sogliano Cavour, a place that resonated with their values and offered cultural depth.

With a budget of around €250,000 for the property, they invested an additional €350,000 in renovations to restore its historic charm, collaborating with local artisans. Their design choices reflect the local landscape, incorporating warm colors typical of Salento.

The couple’s new lifestyle emphasizes slower living, community, and craftsmanship. They prioritize meaningful moments over material possessions and have found inspiration from their surroundings in their work. They now embrace daily routines filled with local interactions, scenic walks, and culinary delights.

The transition included challenges, particularly in navigating the renovation process and adapting to the region’s pace of life. However, Mahtani, fluent in Italian, found ways to connect with local tradespeople, emphasizing relationships over efficiency.

Overall, their move wasn’t simply about a house; it represented a shift toward a richer, more connected way of living, surrounded by community and tradition.
