Study Shows Dog Owners Sleep Better Together

A new study reveals that dog owners who share a bed with their pets often sleep more soundly than expected. Researchers from the U.S. and Canada found that nighttime movements of humans and their dogs are strongly correlated, with both usually waking up at similar times.

The study observed the sleep patterns of 25 humans and their 38 dogs over four weeks using activity monitors. Interestingly, while owners reported feeling that their dogs disturbed their sleep, the results indicated that pet owners did not experience significant changes in sleep duration or quality. Instead, the findings suggested that humans generally began moving before their dogs, implying that humans may disturb the dog’s sleep more often.

Key Findings:

  • Correlated Activity: Humans and dogs typically synchronized their nighttime activities.
  • Subjective vs. Objective Measures: Total sleep quality reported by owners did not always align with objective measurements taken by the monitors.
  • Sleep Influence: Although sleeping with a dog did not notably impact human sleep, more dogs in a household correlated with poorer self-reported sleep quality.

Expert Insights

Lavania Nagendran, one of the study’s authors, noted the intriguing pattern of synchronized nighttime behaviors between pets and their owners. Ming Fei Li, another co-author, mentioned future plans to explore how different types of dogs might display varying sleep patterns, thus enhancing understanding of canine behavior.

Overall, the researchers emphasized that the relationship between humans and their pets is reciprocal, with each influencing the other’s routines and behaviors at nighttime.
