AMD has announced that its FSR 4 upscaling technology will soon be available for APUs, laptops with integrated GPUs, and gaming handhelds. This expansion aims to enhance image quality for users of integrated Radeon graphics systems, which previously only had access to FSR 4 if they owned Radeon 9000 or 7000 series GPUs.
Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President, confirmed that the machine-learning-based FSR 4 technology is set to roll out by year’s end. Initially exclusive to RDNA 4 GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT—due to its support for native FP8 processing—FSR 4 was adapted for RDNA 3 GPUs following community interest and modder demonstrations.
Despite these adaptations, until now, APUs with RDNA 3.5 or RDNA 3 graphics were excluded. This update aims to bring FSR 4’s image-enhancing capabilities to a broader range of devices, potentially improving image quality significantly.
However, performance impacts are still uncertain. FSR 4 runs more efficiently on RDNA 4 compared to RDNA 3, and with the iGPUs in newer APUs being smaller, further optimizations will be necessary. Huynh noted that a dedicated model has been created to lighten the load of FSR 4 on APUs while maintaining high image quality and low latency.
Looking ahead, AMD plans to introduce FSR 4 support for the RDNA 2 Radeon 6000 series in 2027.
