Join Us for a Special Event with Matthew Stevenson!
We are excited to welcome travel writer Matthew Stevenson to the Lander Library! He will read from and sign copies of his book, Reading the Rails, on October 13 at 5:30 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy snacks and punch while you’re there!
About the Book:
Reading the Rails takes readers on an adventurous journey through Russia, China, Eastern Europe, Malaysia, pre-war Syria, and the United States.
Matthew Stevenson, acclaimed travel writer and essayist, shares his experiences with wit and historical insight as he travels along both celebrated train routes and lesser-known branch lines in places like Kosovo, Greece, Poland, and Transnistria—a region he refers to as Stalin’s showroom.
In his travels, Stevenson explores significant historical landmarks and events, like:
- Port Arthur and the 1904 Russo-Japanese War
- The origins of World War II from Prague to Berlin
- The state of Amtrak and the decline of American passenger rail service
Reading the Rails is a unique blend of travel narrative and historical exploration, capturing the romance of trains alongside the politics and tragedies that shaped these regions.
This event is made possible by a generous grant from the Fremont County Library Foundation. Don’t miss out!
