PENN Entertainment (PENN) Shares Increase: Here’s the Reason Behind It

What Happened?

Shares of PENN Entertainment (NASDAQ:PENN) surged 5.3% in pre-market trading after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy and increased its price target from $23 to $25. Analyst Carlo Santarelli noted strengthening fundamentals in regional gaming and Las Vegas markets, suggesting that previous share price declines did not reflect the economic reality of the business.

Earlier this month, PENN’s theScore Bet secured a multiyear partnership as an official NFL partner for sports betting and online casino operations in Canada, covering regions such as Ontario and Alberta. This agreement allows PENN to utilize NFL trademarks in its marketing efforts, an enhancement following earlier collaborations, including a deal with the Canadian Football League.

After the initial rise, PENN’s shares settled at $15.74, reflecting a 4.2% increase from the prior close.

What Is the Market Telling Us?

PENN Entertainment’s stock has exhibited high volatility, experiencing over 26 price movements of more than 5% within the past year. The current increase indicates that the market finds this latest news significant but does not foresee a fundamental shift in the company’s outlook.

Previously, the stock had a notable drop of 4.6% due to rising Treasury yields and interest rates, raising concerns over consumer spending. As borrowing costs are rising for mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards, consumers are focusing on essentials rather than discretionary purchases. Recent data indicating a decline in the U.S. Leading Economic Index has further heightened worries about slowing consumer spending, which adversely impacts revenue growth in the consumer sector.

Despite an overall increase of 6% since the start of the year, PENN’s recent price of $15.74 still places it 28.7% below its 52-week high of $22.06 from June 2026. Investors who purchased $1,000 worth of shares five years ago would now hold shares worth only $219.87, reflecting the stock’s challenging historical performance.
