Introducing Trío Los Caramelos: The Ensemble Keeping Generational Sounds Alive

Trio Los Caramelos: Keeping the Bolero Tradition Alive

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – You’re tuning in to Trio Los Caramelos, a group dedicated to the enchanting sounds of bolero music, a passionate and slow rhythmic style that originated in 19th-century Cuba.

William Argueta describes bolero as “the sound of love… love of life.” Since its inception in 2023, Trio Los Caramelos has been captivating audiences at key locations like Mariachi Plaza and Olvera Street, adding a unique Mexican twist to the genre.

Argueta believes bolero music bears a “special essence” that makes it timeless. Their popularity has soared ever since, including an opportunity to open for Trio Los Panchos at the Ford Theater.

Dominique Rodriguez highlights the universal appeal of bolero: “It hits a part inside of you… even if you don’t understand the words, you feel it.”

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the LA-based trio aims to keep the bolero genre vibrant, bridging generational gaps. Matthew Jacquez shared a personal reflection, noting, “I grew up one of those kids who didn’t have a huge connection to the culture… With bolero I’ve learned how to read and write the language, and I feel much more connected to my roots.”

Trio Los Caramelos regularly performs at Cafe Tondo in Chinatown and Bar Tinto in Costa Mesa. For performance dates, check out their Instagram.

Dominick Maldonado encourages everyone, saying, “If you’re intrigued by the music, don’t be shy, come listen. We’d be happy to play for you all.”
