INTERSCAPE: A Promising New Title from ROOMTONE Games
At the Tokyo Game Show, I experienced INTERSCAPE, an innovative cinematic action game developed by a tiny team of just ten developers at ROOMTONE Games. Drawing inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s iconic films, this title offers a mind-bending and immersive adventure.
I left the preview confident that INTERSCAPE will make significant waves in the gaming world. It combines elements reminiscent of Control, Interstellar, and Inception, yet it manages to carve out a unique identity, making it one of my standout experiences from the event.
INTERSCAPE’s Awards and Recognition
INTERSCAPE showcased at the Tokyo Game Show as one of the SELECTED INDIE 80 titles, earning the Gold Award among just eight games. I was initially intrigued by the game’s art as I wandered the bustling show floor, though the core concept initially left me confused. A discussion with the studio’s CEO, Dongwook Kim, helped clarify the impressive vision behind the game.
The Unique Premise
Imagine a world where everyone is ensnared within an inescapable network of dreams. What began as revolutionary technology devolved into a nightmare, with a mysterious black sphere—reminiscent of a black hole—consuming humanity’s collective dreamscape. Players take on the role of Agent K, navigating through various dreams to unravel the central mystery. Each dream presents unique abilities, archetypes, and challenges, as players confront a tangled web of nightmares to save humanity.
The demo transported me through settings ranging from an Interstellar-style “tesseract” to a 1920s noir thriller, battling enemies in a visually striking monochromatic world that dynamically shifted.
Gameplay Features
Several aspects of the INTERSCAPE preview stood out to me:
-
Combat Mechanics: A satisfying mix of hand-to-hand and ranged combat. While exploring, I wielded a large key, which I could throw to manipulate the environment both offensively and defensively.
-
Engaging Dialogue: The characters, including Hana, Agent K, and Void, displayed good chemistry, complemented by genuine and humorous dialogue.
-
Fluid Movement: The movement incorporates basic puzzle-solving that centers on traversal, enabling light parkour elements as players navigate through warping dreamscapes.
Players can expect a gameplay experience similar to Control, moving fluidly through diverse environments and battling foes across shifting planes.
Future Prospects
INTERSCAPE has garnered attention since its inception and has made a prominent splash at the Tokyo Game Show. I’m thrilled to have discovered it in the crowded space, and it quickly found a place on my wishlist after the demo.
The game is set to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Game Pass. Interested players can wishlist it now on Steam and await further updates.
