Haywood Hosts Autumn Block Party to Attract Travel Writers and Promote Tourism

Travel Writers Gather in Haywood County

An international organization of travel writers is spending the week in Haywood County, N.C., thanks to the local tourism agency’s efforts. The highlight is the Fall Block Party in downtown Waynesville, designed to showcase the area for over 200 attendees of the Society of American Travel Writers Annual Convention.

Jean Whisnant, owner of Valentine’s Mountain Arts and Crafts, contributed to the festivities with live glass-blowing demonstrations, expressing the joy of sharing her craft. Corrina Ruffieux, executive director of Visit Haywood, emphasized the importance of this event, the first of its kind held in a rural community in 70 years. “We’re highlighting the best of Haywood—from our businesses to our food and music,” she said.

Ruffieux believes the presence of these journalists will significantly lift the profile of Haywood County and western North Carolina, bringing long-term economic benefits. Travel writer Jason Frye noted that visitors are captivated by the area’s natural beauty.

Content creator Alec Sills-Trausch shared his enthusiasm for the stunning location and intends to share his experience through social media, hoping to inspire others to explore beyond Asheville.

The anticipation is that these experiences will translate into positive stories and increased tourism in the region.
