Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve – A New Pilot’s Perspective
I recently dove into the world of Ace Combat with its latest release, Wings of Theve. Despite having heard about the series for years, this week marked my first experience, aided by a review code from Bandai Namco.
The game is straightforward: it focuses solely on aerial combat, providing a series of missions that blend story-driven cutscenes with intense flight action. You play as a pilot who starts out alongside the legendary ace, Wings of Theve, only to find yourself stepping into their shoes after a tragic turn of events. The narrative unfolds through briefings and cinematic moments, while your main focus remains on flying.
The variety of missions keeps gameplay fresh. From escorting troops to engaging in aerial dogfights, each challenge tests your piloting skills. There are two control schemes: a classic setup that allows fine control but can be challenging, and a more casual option that simplifies movement, making it easier for beginners like me.
Graphically, Wings of Theve shines on PC. Running at 1440p on high settings with an Nvidia rig, it offers stunning visuals with realistic weather effects and beautifully detailed aircraft. The game’s ability to maintain stability at 60fps enhances the overall experience, making dogfights thrilling and immersive.
After just over ten missions, I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I’m enjoying the game amidst a crowded release schedule. If you’ve never ventured into Ace Combat, I highly recommend stepping into the cockpit with Wings of Theve. Whether on PS5, Xbox, or PC, it serves as a perfect entry point into this long-standing franchise.
