Fewer than 7,000 wild cheetahs left as illegal pet trade devastates cub populations.

Dr. Laurie Marker, a global conservation icon, began her remarkable journey in Oregon at Wildlife Safari, where she developed a passion for cheetahs. In 1977, she conducted a pioneering experiment by traveling to Africa with a cheetah born in Winston to see if it could be trained to hunt.

Marker, recognized as a “Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine, recently shared urgent updates about the crisis facing wild cheetahs. With fewer than 7,000 left in the wild, a devastating surge in the illegal pet trade is threatening their survival, resulting in the death of 90% of poached cubs before they can be sold. To combat this issue, she has opened a second headquarters for the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Somaliland, which currently houses over 100 rescued cheetahs.
