Eva Marie Saint passes away: Star of ‘North by Northwest’ and ‘On the Waterfront’ has died.

Eva Marie Saint, the esteemed actress famed for her Oscar-winning debut in On the Waterfront and her role as a seductive spy in North by Northwest, passed away at the age of 102 due to natural causes at her home in Los Angeles.

Initially discovered by director Elia Kazan while on stage in Broadway, Saint starred opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, catapulting her to fame. She continued to work with Hollywood legends such as Paul Newman, Yves Montand, and Gregory Peck throughout her career.

Despite being groomed as a leading lady in the 1950s, she chose to prioritize her family over the pursuit of superstardom. Saint mentioned in interviews how her decision to raise children often led her to decline many roles. As movie opportunities dwindled, she transitioned to television in the 1970s, landing roles in series like Moonlighting and earning an Emmy for her performance in the miniseries People Like Us.

Saint’s extensive career also featured notable film appearances in Don’t Come Knocking, Because of Winn-Dixie, and Superman Returns. Throughout her life, she maintained strong ties to the theater, recalling her time working alongside Lillian Gish and speaking highly of her experiences with Brando on set.

Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, Eva Marie Saint was raised in a Quaker family and initially pursued a teaching career before committing to acting. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, passed away in 2016.
