Challenging Norms: Brennan Bailey Resurrects a Neglected Era of Fashion – Verde Magazine

Brennan Bailey, a senior at Palo Alto High School, stands out with his unique vintage fashion style, contrasting sharply with the typical attire of his peers. Frequently seen in wool pants and cap-toe Oxfords, Bailey’s outfits feature a vibrant mix—from dazzling jackets to wide-brimmed hats and a distinctive leather bag. He embraces his individuality through fashion, stating, “It’s more true to myself to do what I like to do, not what I think other people would like to perceive me as.”

His journey into fashion began in middle school when he discovered his grandfather’s U.S. Navy uniforms. This sparked a love for vintage styles, prompting him to thrift and create pieces using an antique sewing machine. Bailey draws inspiration from various historical periods, such as the Victorian and Edwardian Eras, and enjoys the process of tailoring and pattern creation.

Despite facing mixed reactions from classmates, including compliments and curious inquiries about his outfits, Bailey remains resolute in his fashion choices. Fellow senior Tess Kim noted his influence on others, encouraging them to explore and experiment with their style. Bailey emphasizes that individuality in fashion is important and advises, “Start small, ease into it and figure it out inch by inch.”

His closet not only showcases his distinctive fashion sense but also serves as a collection of memories from travels, with each ring on his fingers symbolizing a different place he has visited. Through his creativity and dedication, Bailey illustrates the joy of expressing oneself through clothing.
