The application for Butler’s Resident Assistant (RA) role for the 2027-28 academic year is now open, prompting many students to consider applying. Current RAs provide insights into how the role enhances the student experience.
Senior health sciences major Ellie Evans shared that her RA supported her during her adjustment to college, ultimately influencing her decision to apply for the position. “I have grown a lot and matured a lot through this experience,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of connecting with new people.
Contrary to common assumptions that the RA role is easy, the job involves significant responsibilities like handling emotional situations and balancing academics with duty shifts. Junior Max Haley explained the unpredictability of being on call, requiring immediate response to situations that can arise at any hour.
Senior dance arts administration major Logan Byrd highlighted the different challenges faced by first-year versus older students. RAs play a crucial role in supporting residents as they navigate college life, regardless of their year.
Despite their busy schedules, RAs are vital in fostering community within residence halls, as Haley observed the vibrant social dynamics in ResCo. Students looking to become RAs should possess traits like empathy and strong communication skills, as Evans pointed out.
If interested in the RA position, potential applicants should attend the final information session on October 7 at 6 p.m. in the Irvington community room before the application deadline on October 18 at noon.
