Burke: New Owners of Smugglers’ Notch Focus on Harmonizing Expansion with Local Ski Traditions

The new owners of Burke Mountain and Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont are investing in significant upgrades ahead of ski season as they aim to keep the independent resorts competitive. At Burke Mountain Resort, construction crews are working on a major renovation of the Bear Den, a beloved midmountain retreat. This is part of a broader initiative to modernize the resorts after a decade of federal receivership.

Jon Schaefer, a principal in Bear Den Partners, which also acquired Smugglers’ Notch, emphasizes the importance of evolving their business model to cut costs on essentials like fuel and insurance. This, in turn, allows for enhancements in snowmaking, trail maintenance, and dining options. With growing competition from larger resorts, Schaefer and others believe that while investment is essential, maintaining the unique, local character of the resorts is equally vital.

Matt Lorelli, editor of POWDER Magazine, notes the delicate balance between modernization and preserving the homegrown vibe that draws many to Vermont’s independent mountains. Listening to the skier community will be crucial for the resorts’ long-term success.

Schaefer anticipates that it will take about five years of upgrades for the resorts to fully realize their potential, and local communities are hopeful for a successful and snowy season ahead.
