North Carolina’s Hope Valley Country Club is Serving Up a Hardcourt Success Model
There was a time when the tennis pro shop at Hope Valley Country Club sat silently many afternoons, a remnant of a bygone era. However, the modern racquet sports boom, fueled by the rising popularity of pickleball and padel, has transformed the landscape. Private clubs are evolving to meet a growing demand for social, multi-sport recreation.
A Vibrant Community in Transformation
Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, N.C., serves as an exemplary case study. Under the guidance of Alec Moore, the director of racquet sports, the club’s tennis and pickleball program has undergone significant transformation over the past three years. Moore, who joined from Southern Village Club, has revitalized the program, focusing on community, connection, and inclusivity.
“When I got here, the program was budding for someone to come in and listen to our membership,” Moore noted. His approach emphasizes creating a welcoming environment, where members are known personally, fostering friendships and healthy lifestyles.
Expanding Opportunities
With the golf course set for a nine-month renovation by Kris Spence, there’s ample opportunity to elevate the racquet program. Moore envisions 2027 as the year of racquet sports at Hope Valley, aiming to ensure that all members have access to enjoy these activities while the golf facilities are closed.
Tennis and Pickleball: Diverse Offerings
Hope Valley boasts seven Har-Tru clay tennis courts, one championship hardcourt, and a lighted pickleball complex featuring three courts. The growing interest has resulted in impressive participation rates, with a 30% increase this year alone due to favorable weather and engaging programming.
Innovative Programming
One standout initiative has been the introduction of cardio tennis, which combines fitness and fun. This program encourages a lively environment, breaking away from the traditional country club vibe. It serves as a cornerstone of the club’s offerings, with clinics running multiple times per week.
Beyond cardio tennis, junior programs are also thriving. Moore has established junior team tennis that mirrors adult USTA leagues, fostering competition among younger players and increasing interest in racquet sports.
Engaging Younger Generations
The appeal of pickleball has attracted many juniors, particularly through innovative initiatives like glow pickleball, which provides a unique night-time experience with neon décor and lively music. This not only enhances participation but often leads kids to explore tennis as well.
Collaborative Support
Despite the golf-centric focus of many Bobby Jones Links-managed clubs, Moore has found considerable support for racquet sports. He plays a pivotal role in guiding other clubs in the network, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the organization.
Moore expressed gratitude for the robust support from the management team for resources in marketing and budgeting, further bolstering the racquet sports program at Hope Valley.
Through a combination of innovative programming, community-building initiatives, and collaborative support, Hope Valley Country Club is riding the wave of the current racquet sports resurgence, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for members of all ages.
