Type One Energy, a fusion power startup based in Knoxville, Tennessee, has successfully raised $200 million in its latest funding round, helping it rank among the top-funded fusion companies. Founded in 2019, Type One aims to build commercial fusion power plants, with plans to develop a 400-megawatt plant by 2034.
CEO Christofer Mowry highlighted the company’s strategy of designing plant components while leveraging a “bespoke” network of suppliers, which allows Type One to keep costs down compared to competitors who manufacture many parts in-house. This integrative approach positions them to manage risks and maintain focus on their core competencies.
The funding round, which was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital, is expected to enable Type One to advance its ambitious plans in the challenging field of fusion energy, which combines cutting-edge science with high material costs. The company has already engaged with partners like AECOM for engineering support and has licensed critical superconducting magnet technology from Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
