Trump Proposes 300% Tariffs on Foreign Nations and Companies That Don’t Invest in the U.S.

Trump’s Tariff Threats at Campaign Rally

During a recent campaign rally in Vandalia, Ohio, President Trump escalated his rhetoric regarding tariffs, proposing that offshore companies face tariffs between 150% and 300% unless they invest in American manufacturing. He emphasized that corporations from countries such as South Korea, China, Japan, and Canada could see these steep duty hikes if they delay in building operations in the U.S.

Reflecting on past practices, Trump stated, “Countries around the world… have used tariffs against the United States for a long time.” He proposed a “window of about a year and a half” for companies to set up plants in the U.S. before facing excessive tariffs.

Trump claimed that his tariff strategy has previously attracted trillions in investments to the U.S. In particular, he applied pressure on South Korea to fulfill a commitment to invest $350 billion in U.S. projects, which includes a significant investment in shipbuilding. Following tensions regarding this agreement, South Korea ultimately committed to a plan to invest up to $20 billion annually.

Despite some agreements, Trump’s administration continues to threaten tariff increases against South Korea for non-compliance. On the other hand, his comments about Canada drew scrutiny, as Ohio’s manufacturing sector is sensitive to potential retaliatory tariffs from Canada, through which Ohio exports significant machinery and metal products annually.

At the G20 Trade Ministerial, U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer conveyed pessimism regarding restoring relations with trading partners, noting outstanding issues were “quite difficult to resolve.” Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround negotiations with India, as their trade agreement with the U.S. faces major setbacks.

Overall, Trump’s campaign rhetoric and tariff proposals underscore ongoing complexities in U.S. trade relations as he presses for more domestic investment from foreign companies.
