Rising Chip Prices Are Increasing Video Game and Console Costs

The rising prices of video games, often attributed to “chipflation,” have been a significant concern for both customers and retailers. Treg Derry, the owner of Luna Video Games in San Diego, notes that while video game prices began to increase gradually around 2010, the rise has accelerated sharply in recent years. Derry recalls a time when gaming systems were priced just under $100, and game cartridges ranged from $20 to $40.

Now, newer games can retail for prices as high as $99.99, leading customers to shift their focus toward older, more affordable systems found in specialty stores like Luna Video Games. These older games can start as low as $5, making them more accessible for families looking for cost-effective entertainment options.

The overall demand for electronic components, driven by the surge in AI data centers, has significantly impacted the costs of various devices, including video game consoles. As prices continue to climb with no signs of decreasing, many are adjusting their purchasing habits to adapt to the new economic reality.
