A copyright complaint filed in California alleges that Olivia Dean’s song “I’ve Seen It” closely resembles Bill Withers’ classic “Just the Two of Us.” The complaint, brought by Mattie Music Group (which manages Withers’ catalog), claims that Dean’s track copied significant elements of the original song. Although Dean and her co-writers are not named as defendants, the complaint names Capitol Records and Universal Music.
The dispute emerged after Mattie Music Group reportedly concluded in August 2026 that Dean’s song displayed “substantial similarities” to Withers’ hit, which was released in 1981. The group cites an analysis by musicologist Alexander Stewart, who noted repeated copying of the melody. They allege that Dean and her collaborators would have had ample opportunity to hear “Just the Two of Us” before writing their song.
The group seeks an injunction against further infringement and unspecified damages, possibly including statutory damages up to $150,000. Dean is currently on tour in support of her album “The Art of Loving.”
