Ole Miss students and bar staff highlight issues of underage drinking, counterfeit ID use, and fraternity misconduct.

The investigation into underage drinking in Oxford, Mississippi, reveals significant concerns among students and local authorities. Many students, including bartenders and venue employees, report widespread use of fake IDs and various methods to bypass age restrictions.

Reagan Fiser, a bartender with seven years in Oxford nightlife, notes that underage students easily slip into bars near the University of Mississippi campus, utilizing techniques like ID sharing and simple hand-offs. Mayor Robyn Tannehill and Police Chief Jeff McCutchen acknowledge the issue, citing numerous incidents involving fake IDs and underage alcohol possession.

Local venues have mixed enforcement experiences; while some bars are diligent about checking IDs, others fail to effectively monitor crowd behavior. Students describe an ethos where underage drinking is normalized, with one sophomore stating, “I think it’s everyone.”

Concerns extend beyond the bars, with reports of illicit drug use, particularly within fraternity events. As enforcement efforts continue, local officials emphasize their commitment to student safety and responsible alcohol management.
