Amol Rajan Eliminated First on Celebrity Traitors
Amol Rajan described his experience on Celebrity Traitors as “agonising, miserable and astonishingly tense.” He shared that Richard E Grant, the contestant who eliminated him, claimed he did so to “protect” himself after revealing his status as a Traitor.
In a newsletter, Rajan confronted Grant post-filming, asking why he was the first to be “murdered.” Grant’s reply was, “To protect myself,” to which Rajan quipped, “But if you really wanted protection, you should have recruited me!” Instead, Grant and fellow Traitor Maya Jama opted to recruit James Acaster.
The First Episode
During the opening episodes, Rajan faced comedian Acaster in a tense showdown. The format required them to plead their case to avoid elimination, but ultimately Rajan was chosen for elimination, leaving Acaster to join the Traitors.
The premiere ended on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers in suspense for 24 hours as they awaited the next eliminations.
The Tension of Reality TV
Rajan elaborated on the intense emotional experience of participating in the show, highlighting how being away from home, disconnected from family, and deprived of personal devices heightened the game’s stakes. He acknowledges that while the game felt consuming, it allowed him to enjoy the process.
Despite his early exit, Rajan expressed enthusiasm for his time on the show, stating, “I loved it. I loved the mission, I loved the Highlands, I loved the game, and above all I loved the players.” After his departure, he reflected on the show during The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked, thinking he could have played differently with hindsight.
Celebrity Traitors airs Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM on BBC One.
