Mark Filanc’s journey with San Diego State University (SDSU) began from a practical industry need: how to sustain and enhance the local construction workforce. As CEO of J.R. Filanc Construction Company, he recognized that many engineers trained at universities often left after gaining experience, returning to their home states. Alongside his brother Peter, Filanc sought a solution: developing a local construction program to keep graduates in the region.
This led to the creation of the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program at SDSU, backed by a significant donation from the Filanc family. This support enabled the establishment of undergraduate and graduate programs, which continue to benefit faculty and students today.
Mark Filanc’s commitment to SDSU extends beyond financial donations; he actively mentors students and shares his expertise as a lecturer and advisory board member. His efforts, alongside industry leaders, have enhanced the program, enabling hundreds of graduates to launch successful careers in construction.
The Filanc family also contributes to scholarships and lecturer endowments, fostering both student growth and industry readiness. Their personal connection is highlighted by their daughter, Michelle, a graduate of the program who has joined the family business.
Through their philanthropic work, the Filancs demonstrate the profound connection between education and industry, underscoring the value of investing in future generations.
