KC Pet Project Sees Surge in Dog Adoptions Amid Free Adoption Event
Kansas City, Mo. – KC Pet Project had just two kennels available last Friday, prompting the shelter to host a free adoption event specifically for large dogs. The community quickly responded, leading to 130 large breeds and 10 small breeds finding forever homes.
According to Caity Lothamer, the shelter’s senior marketing and communications director, the initiative, in partnership with Hills, included waived adoption fees for large breeds and a complimentary pet parent kit featuring a 15-pound bag of Hills dog food.
Unfortunately, as dogs were adopted, more arrivals were noted. Lothamer reported that the shelter took in 118 new dogs, leaving them with only 45 open kennels. She attributed the influx to several factors, including warmer weather encouraging stray dogs to roam and ongoing owner surrenders due to financial or housing issues.
To combat this, KC Pet Project offers resources to families to help keep pets at home. The shelter provides food and assistance and encourages the community to adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate.
Lothamer highlighted the shelter’s “dog day out” program, allowing community members to take a dog for a day, helping to increase visibility and improve their chances of adoption.
Abby Hale visited the shelter to find a companion for her dog. Inspired by the adoption event, she expressed her concern over the number of dogs needing homes and offered a simple message to potential adopters: “Just give it a chance.”
Beginning Friday, six local shelters will kick off a Mega Match event, aiming to adopt out 700 pets over three days for just $25 per pet.
For KC Pet Project, the initiative runs from October 9 to October 11, with every dog or cat available for an adoption fee of $25.
