Health Alert for Eastern Idaho Reservoirs
Toxic bacteria have been detected in two reservoirs in Eastern Idaho, leading to warnings from state health officials. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has issued advisories for:
- Chesterfield Reservoir (40 miles east of Pocatello, Caribou County)
- Island Park Reservoir (near Island Park, Fremont County)
These advisories caution against water exposure for both people and animals due to high levels of toxin-producing cyanobacteria.
Risks and Symptoms
- For Pets and Livestock: The bacteria can be deadly, particularly for dogs that may swim, drink, or lick contaminated water. Signs of illness in animals can appear rapidly.
- For People: Avoid swimming, wading, or any contact with the water. Symptoms from exposure may include:
- Skin rashes, hives, red eyes
- Respiratory issues (wheezing, coughing)
- Digestive problems (stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting)
- Headaches, muscle weakness, dizziness
People experiencing symptoms should consult a healthcare provider or contact the poison center at 1-800-222-1222.
Precautions
- Do not drink or cook with the water since boiling or filtering does not eliminate the toxins.
- Anglers should wash hands thoroughly after handling fish from these reservoirs and ensure proper cleaning of their catch.
- Parents should be vigilant to prevent children from drinking or touching the contaminated water.
Identifying Blooms
Cyanobacteria blooms may appear as mats, foam, or scum on the water’s surface and can emit foul odors. Investigations indicate that these blooms can intensify with rising temperatures.
Monitoring and Updates
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, in collaboration with local health departments and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), is actively monitoring the situation. Updates and advisories will be provided until the situation improves.
