The inaugural Great Valley Gathering took place in downtown Fresno, California, celebrating the rich cultural diversity of the Central Valley. This free, three-day festival at Courthouse Park showcased various traditions, including music, dance, food, and art from communities spanning the region. Organized by the Alliance for California Traditional Arts in collaboration with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the event featured live performances, storytelling, and hands-on activities, allowing attendees to engage directly with traditions such as Indigenous Mixtec music, Armenian music, and Laotian dance.
Participants were also able to explore craftsmanship through areas dedicated to lowrider engraving, cowboy boot making, and Hmong textile art. The festival highlighted the importance of cultural preservation with showcases of Native culture bearers, including language keepers and basket weavers.
As part of the Smithsonian’s “Of the People” initiative, linked to the United States’ 250th anniversary, the event aimed to create dialogue and understanding across different cultural backgrounds. Festivalgoers could also contribute to the Smithsonian’s “We Hold These Truths” project by recording personal reflections. Overall, the Great Valley Gathering served as a vibrant platform for celebration, learning, and connection among diverse communities in the Central Valley.
