A proposed apartment development in downtown Sarasota, which aimed to replace a cluster of colorful cottages housing 17 local businesses, has been voided. The project, named 1899 Fruitville, intended to construct a 324-unit complex near Fruitville Road and Washington Avenue. Although it had received partial city approvals, it was still awaiting final permits.
Business owners had been preparing for relocation due to the development, with some, like Beth Nilsen from Soho Downtown Hair Salon, making arrangements despite the recent news. For others, like Laetitia Kepecz of FAM Vegan Kitchen, the announcement brought relief, as she expressed a desire to extend her lease and remain at the current location.
Despite the voided plans, some business owners had already sought alternative arrangements. The owner of Breakfast House mentioned purchasing a nearby property for a new “Sarasota Bungalow Village” to accommodate businesses together. Nilsen, however, noted the disruption had already impacted her salon, with stylists leaving to pursue other opportunities.
The reversal in development reflects ongoing changes within the historic cottage community. ABC 7 has reached out to project representatives for comments but has yet to receive a response.
