Concert Recap: Beth Orton – Spectrum Culture

Concert Review: Beth Orton at The Old Church, Portland, OR – October 2, 2026

Beth Orton’s performance at The Old Church was a poignant blend of nostalgia and celebration. Touring in support of her latest album, The Ground Above, Orton expressed her frustration over the long wait to share these new songs live. Reflecting on her past, she introduced a track from Comfort of Strangers, emphasizing that she hadn’t toured since its release two decades ago due to personal circumstances.

The sold-out crowd hung on every word, providing a somber yet supportive atmosphere. Backed by three musicians, Orton showcased her talent with fresh interpretations of her classic hits, now enriched by her seasoned voice, which has evolved into a more textured, craggy tone over the years. Notably, songs like “Central Reservation” and “She Cries Your Name” from her debut Superpinkymandy took on new life in a spare, folk-inspired format, moving away from the folktronica roots of her earlier work.

Spanning just over an hour, the set primarily featured eight standout tracks from The Ground Above. While the new material resonated profoundly, fans were left wanting more, as favorites like “Stolen Car” and “Concrete Sky” were notably absent. Orton’s performance maintained a casual charm, interspersed with stories about her artistic journey, including an endearing promise to sign records after the show—a gesture she hadn’t extended during previous concerts.

The live arrangements of The Ground Above deviated toward a folk sensibility, with quiet introspections overshadowed at times by dynamic bursts, as heard in “Otherside.” Orton also treated the audience to “Friday Night” from her acclaimed 2022 release, Weather Alive.

The Old Church provided an intimate setting, with its ethereal ambiance and a prominent pipe organ enhancing the experience. The venue proved ideal for Orton’s reflective songs, highlighting their emotional depth in a way that a typical club environment would not. This concert was a heartfelt reminder of Orton’s artistry, a testament to both her journey and her music’s enduring impact.
