Celebrate Your Furry Friends: Mérida’s ‘Pixán Peek’ Day of the Dead Tribute Altar

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Yucatán bring a rich tapestry of ancient traditions to life, with a unique focus this year on honoring beloved animal companions.

The city council of Mérida has organized a special event as part of the Festival de las Ánimas, creating a grand altar to remember departed pets. This initiative melds time-honored customs with a contemporary appreciation for animals that have been part of people’s lives. Families are invited to gather in remembrance of their dogs, cats, birds, and other pets who have left lasting imprints on their hearts.

### Origins and Meaning of Pixán Peek
In Yucatán, the Day of the Dead is celebrated as Janal Pixán, meaning “food of the soul” in the Yucatec Maya language. The term Pixán Peek has emerged, translating to “dog,” but the celebration is inclusive of all pets. A newer belief has arisen where many people dedicate October 27 to honor their departed animals, marking a time when their spirits are thought to return to visit their families.

The event in Mérida is a perfect fit for this belief, providing a communal space to welcome these animal spirits before the more traditional human-focused celebrations commence.

### The Grand Communal Altar
The core of this initiative is a massive communal altar, which will be unveiled on October 25 in Gran Santa Fe Norte. This installation serves as a space for the community to unite in remembrance, celebrating the unbreakable bond between humans and their animal companions. The city council emphasizes that this gathering is not only a tribute to the loyalty and lessons pets provide but also an opportunity to reflect on the love shared.

A poignant motto for this year reminds participants that although their pets may no longer be physically present, their memories and “footprints” in families’ lives endure.

### Community Participation
To include everyone’s memories, organizers have opened up for public participation through an online form. Families can submit photos and short texts to honor their departed pets until March 20, creating an altar that truly resonates with the community.

This heartfelt initiative fosters gratitude for the time shared with pets, transforming sorrow into a celebration of love and memories.
