The USC community is experiencing significant changes in how it will celebrate Latinx/e Heritage Month this year. Unlike the previous year’s vibrant Noche de Cultura event, which attracted over 650 attendees and featured performances by Mariachi Los Troyanos and Grupo Folklórico, the university has opted to shift the focus of programming to student organizations, providing them a more prominent role in planning cultural events.
USC’s decision comes in response to student feedback for a greater say in shaping these celebrations, although as of now, no major kickoff or closing events have been announced for the month running from September 15 to October 15. Instead, student organizations like La CASA are organizing their own community events, such as movie nights and cultural gatherings, though the lack of centralized programming raises concerns among students.
Gian Marco Velásquez, president of the USC chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, expressed disappointment over the absence of a university-wide celebration, reflecting on earlier experiences where such events fostered cultural pride. Elizabeth Sandoval, a sociology junior, echoed the sentiment that while student-led events are meaningful, the university should be transparent about its choices.
Instructors and students alike stress that cultural celebrations at a diverse institution like USC are crucial for fostering a sense of belonging, helping students navigate challenges such as imposter syndrome, and enhancing connections that can support academic success. The broader implications of reduced programming could lead to fragmentation among cultural communities if not addressed, particularly in a time when inclusivity is essential.
The university’s shift highlights the evolving dynamics of cultural representation and student engagement within higher education, reminiscent of broader societal discussions on inclusion and representation.
