The movie “Digger,” featuring Tom Cruise, had a disappointing box office debut, earning only $8 million in the U.S. and Canada, landing it in fifth place. With a hefty production budget of $125 million, the film’s total earnings worldwide reached just $20 million, indicating a likely significant financial loss for Warner Bros. This underwhelming performance follows a year of struggles for the studio, contrasting sharply with their previous year’s successes.
In comparison, Amazon MGM Studios’ “Verity,” starring Anne Hathaway, topped the domestic box office with $32.6 million.
“Digger,” directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, took nine years to develop and is a satire about a climate change apocalypse caused by an oil tycoon, portrayed by Cruise in heavy prosthetics. Despite the creative efforts, including the use of practical effects, the film fell short in captivating audiences. The lack of strong performance from “Digger” adds to Warner Bros.’ box office challenges, which has seen its total domestic haul significantly decrease compared to last year.
