Silverstone to Reduce Carbon Emissions by 600 Tonnes with Certas Energy’s HVO Fuel

Silverstone Goes Green with HVO

Event Saves 645 Tonnes of CO₂e

Certas Energy has partnered with Silverstone to fuel major events, including the Formula 1 Pirelli British Grand Prix, using 250,000 litres of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). This initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 645 tonnes of CO₂e, compared to standard diesel.

HVO will power generators for upcoming events like the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championships and the Motor Racing Legends event. This marks the third year of Silverstone’s collaboration with Certas Energy, contributing to a combined savings of 1,549 tonnes of CO₂e over the previous two years.

Key Initiatives:

  • Part of Silverstone’s Shift to Zero initiative in alignment with Formula 1’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon by 2030.
  • According to Sophie Ellis, ESG impact manager at Silverstone, the circuit is committed to renewable fuels.
  • Certas Energy’s HVO Carbon Savings Calculator was used to verify emission reductions.

Additional Notes:

  • Consumption of HVO reached 408 million litres in the UK in just the first ten months of 2025.
  • Collaboration with partners such as Certas Energy reinforces Silverstone’s commitment to sustainable practices.
