ROP alerts parents about potential blackmail dangers in online gaming.

Cybersecurity Challenges in Online Gaming: Insights from the Royal Oman Police

MUSCAT: The rise of video games as interactive platforms has not only enhanced player engagement through voice and video communication but has also introduced significant challenges in cybersecurity.

Brigadier Jamal bin Habib al Quraishi, Director-General of the Directorate of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation, emphasized that the prevalence of online multiplayer games creates digital communities where players can interact with strangers, providing an ideal environment for cybercriminals to manipulate children and teenagers. “These cybercriminals often establish trust with young users before making inappropriate requests,” he stated.

Risks for Young Players

Young players are particularly vulnerable to blackmail via video games. Many engage with unknown individuals and inadvertently share personal information. Al Quraishi highlighted alarming cases where children were coerced into sending pictures of family members, which were later used against them for extortion. The risks can extend beyond bullying and exposure to inappropriate content, reaching serious offenses against moral and public decency.

Parents are urged to closely monitor behavioral changes in their children, such as increased sadness, anxiety, or a fear of losing their mobile device. Often, young victims of blackmail of do not report incidents to their parents.

Guidance for Parents

To effectively support their children, Brigadier Al Quraishi advises parents against reacting with anger or blame. Instead, they should create an open environment that encourages children to share their experiences without fear.

Parents are also warned against deleting any related content—such as chats, images, or videos—that could help identify the extortionist. Such materials are crucial for the authorities to investigate and address incidents of cybercrime.

Importance of Reporting

The Royal Oman Police stress the importance of reporting such incidents, particularly when minors are involved. They handle these cases with utmost confidentiality and professionalism. Parents are discouraged from confronting the perpetrator by themselves; the specialized authorities are equipped to deal with such situations effectively.

Brigadier Al Quraishi reassured the community, stating, “Our goal is to protect victims’ privacy, stop blackmail, and ensure the legal repercussions for cybercriminals, regardless of the anonymity they may think they possess online.”

The Royal Oman Police urge all video game enthusiasts to use communication features wisely, avoiding the sharing of personal information or images that could be exploited by cybercriminals.
