In Metallica’s grasp, Sphere transforms into an utterly savage Las Vegas getaway.

Metallica’s Spectacular Debut at Sphere, Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV. — Metallica delivered a remarkable performance at Sphere on Thursday, making history as the first metal band to grace the venue. The night featured stunning visuals enhanced by a 16k-resolution display, culminating in an experience that combined the band’s powerful music with mesmerizing imagery.

The concert opened with the deep cut “The Call of Ktulu,” as a monstrous leviathan swatted at fighter jets on the screen. In a touching moment, lead singer James Hetfield dedicated the track to the band’s late bassist, Cliff Burton, who tragically lost his life in a bus accident in 1986. “In honor of our fallen brother, Mr. Clifford Lee Burton,” Hetfield declared, prompting a passionate reaction from the audience.

Metallica has always excelled at blending the grandeur of metal with its gritty essence, and their ongoing “M72” tour continues to set records, recently among the top-grossing tours of all time. Hetfield acknowledged the significance of the venue and the audience’s investment, thanking them for attending.

The atmosphere in Las Vegas was electric, with nearly 20,000 fans sporting Metallica gear, transforming the Strip into a sea of metal appreciation. Across the crowd were veterans of the metal scene mingling with younger fans, showcasing the genre’s intergenerational appeal.

While other acts have used Sphere’s advanced audiovisual technology to complement their music, Metallica’s explosive presence made the visuals feel almost secondary. Their setlist displayed their impressive catalog, from the thunderous opener “Battery” to the emotional “Nothing Else Matters,” ensuring both nights of the engagement felt uniquely curated.

The first night culminated in a powerful close with “Master of Puppets,” while the following evening featured a distinctly different setlist, demonstrating the band’s versatility and deep connection with their audience.

In a surprising twist of irony, the lyrics from “Ride The Lightning,” which touch on themes of execution, resonated in the expansive venue, enhancing the overall experience. The night ended with their anthem “Enter Sandman,” marking a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable inaugural weekend.

As metal finds a place in the elite Las Vegas entertainment scene, Metallica’s performance solidifies the genre’s continued relevance and its role as an escapist experience for fans.
