Exciting News: We’ve Achieved Our Sixth Goal—On to Our Seventh with More Original Reporting!

Are you ready to support our mission? If you’ve been considering contributing, now is the perfect time to make a donation!

Thanks to your generous support, we have successfully reached our first six funding milestones: ensuring essential IT infrastructure, enhancing our comments section, funding our Coffee Break/Sunday links features, providing bonuses to our dedicated writers, expanding our Links section, and combating burnout.

However, we still need further support! We are currently falling short of our financial targets for the upcoming year. Head over to the Tip Jar and help us meet our goals!

Our seventh objective is to secure funding for more original reporting. While it might seem unusual to classify this as our final goal, it is indeed crucial.

The previous targets are vital for the site’s sustainability. For instance, compensating our regular writers not only acknowledges their hard work but also attracts accomplished contributors, as evidenced by the involvement of writers like Haig, Nat, and Curro.

Readers have expressed that one of the aspects they cherish about Naked Capitalism is our sharp analysis of financial, economic, and increasingly geopolitical stories, along with the power dynamics involved.

Additionally, our talented team often incorporates significant amounts of original reporting in their work. For instance, Haig’s Armed Madhouse frequently utilizes official data and public sources, while Conor, Nick, and Curro regularly reference speeches and policy documents. KLG examines studies on new medications and medical developments, while Nat dives into official declarations from major party organizations. Personally, I enjoy scrutinizing court cases.

Despite the positive feedback we’ve received from readers, we’re still striving to catch up in terms of donations. If you haven’t contributed yet, please consider doing so! The Tip Jar is waiting for you! This year, we’ve been particularly touched by the number of readers who have donated between $5 and $30, sharing their desire to contribute more given their fixed incomes. Conversely, Nancy T, who sponsored the second Double Your Donation challenge, recently made another significant contribution.

In recent discussions surrounding our posts on the Iran War, many of you shared how essential Naked Capitalism has become to you. We appreciate your kind words, but we also need funds to cover our expenses! Please visit the Tip Jar and contribute!

Here are some heartfelt messages from our readers:

Thank you to Yves and all the writers at NC for their hard work. You manage to keep going in spite of everything. Please know it is appreciated.

And from Chris C:

I am someone with above-average intelligence, yet I am in awe of your superior and beautiful mind. I’m grateful for your strong principles of honesty and caring. You work tirelessly to deliver insightful analyses, which we can use to contribute to a better world—something desperately needed today.

In my later years, I’ve realized that there’s far more malevolence in the world than I ever anticipated. To combat this, ordinary individuals require genuine understanding of what is happening in finance and government—not the misleading narratives. Your honest and informed writing is a tremendous gift to people like me who lack the educational background, time, or resources to research these subjects. Please keep this in mind during challenging times.

Thank you, Yves, for utilizing your talents for the greater good. You are a gem.

[Yves blushes modestly]

And Henry Moon Pie adds:

The essential aspect of being an NC reader is that you won’t be blindsided, even in these unpredictable times. The site’s leadership consistently acts like skilled scouts, revealing what lies ahead—both good and bad. Sometimes, this means uncomfortable truths, but that’s why your connection with reality remains strong when you read NC.

Lastly, from Jon C:

I cannot imagine my day without visiting NC for the links and your outstanding articles and commentary… a beacon in the information wilderness.

I am striving to create positive change through nonprofit work here in Camden, NJ, even though nonprofits themselves often reflect the city’s deep-seated issues. NC has broadened my understanding and provided context to the forces that have hollowed out communities like Camden, which serves as a stark example of where many parts of the country seem to be heading. My regular engagement with your site helps me feel less isolated amid the chaos.

One of the reasons we’ve managed to exceed expectations is the high-quality contributions from our community.

While our analysis and insights into news stories certainly make a significant impact, our standout achievements stem from original reporting. We’ve pressured numerous officials to resign, starting with Andrew Bowden from the SEC, who sought a job for his son from those he regulates.

Moreover, our efforts compelled a significant transformation in private equity when we persuaded CalPERS to disclose its fee payments, particularly concerning the infamous carry fee. Hubert Horan’s series on Uber has prompted journalists to finally question the company’s fundamentals. Lambert’s relentless Covid coverage early on emphasized that *Covid is airborne* and encouraged community members to adopt layered defenses, which many attribute to saving lives.

Conor has tackled new topics, like the fractures in Europe due to Ukrainization and rising authoritarianism, highlighted by the debanking and recent closure of Autistici/Inventati. Nick has been unwavering in his coverage of the war on cash and Trump’s meddling in Latin American politics, despite Argentina’s economic crisis. KLG has been documenting significant medical advancements and challenging misleading claims. Curro recently reported from BRICS 2025, while Haig has investigated military weaponry, grift, and deception. Lastly, Nat, along with Conor and Nick, has examined the influence of tech billionaires and emerging political alliances born from tragic fractures.

We aspire to enhance our original reporting, but we understand why traditional journalists often criticize bloggers: producing a well-researched story can take four to ten times more effort than a simple blog post of analysis. Consider this example we published earlier from the Columbia Journalism Review:

In the current economic climate, approving lengthy, in-depth reports that might not garner as much traffic as lighter articles has become increasingly rare. A recent Mother Jones report, in which a senior reporter worked four months as a corrections officer, exemplifies this challenge. Although the comprehensive 35,000-word piece exposed corruption in private prisons, it cost about $350,000 to produce and only generated $5,000 in banner ads.

While Naked Capitalism readers appreciate more substantial content, original reporting demands significantly more investigative effort than merely analyzing news. It often requires following leads that may not yield results, in addition to incurring genuine expenses like hiring lawyers for FOIA requests.

In summary, original reporting is not only costly but increasingly essential, especially as mainstream media faces budget constraints and becomes less daring.

Our funding target for original reporting is $45,000, and we have already raised $970 toward this goal.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated, and we welcome new supporters who have just learned about our fundraising effort to help us enhance our site.
