Travel Demand Remains Strong in China as Various Tourist Attractions Implement Visitor Restrictions During National Day Holidays

During the National Day holidays in China, travel and spending remain robust, especially in tourist hotspots like Qingdao in Shandong Province. On October 3, 2026, millions took to railways, with the Yangtze River Delta alone expecting 3.84 million passenger trips on the fourth holiday day. To accommodate the surge, railway operators enhanced service by adding 104 trains.

Nationwide, over 18 million trips were recorded on the preceding Saturday, reflecting sustained domestic travel. Popular tourist sites, including Mount Emei and the Palace Museum, are experiencing high demand, with some reaching full capacity and implementing visitor limits.

Shopping trends are also promising; offshore duty-free purchases in Hainan surpassed 358 million yuan, marking an 8.85% increase from the previous year. In Shandong, key attractions welcomed nearly 4.9 million visitors, generating significant revenue increases compared to last year.

Overall, the data highlights a thriving travel season and a strong rebound in consumer spending during the holiday period.
