Thailand’s Leaders Kick Off Gastech 2026 Emphasizing Energy Security and Cost-Effectiveness

Gastech 2026 opened in Bangkok with significant discussions led by Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Minister of Energy Akanat Promphan. They emphasized key global energy priorities: security, affordability, rising demand, and investment.

Minister Promphan stated that energy security is now a collective government priority amidst substantial changes within the global energy sector. He advocated for more resilient energy systems, positioning Thailand as a regional partner for energy cooperation.

With global natural gas demand at approximately 4,000.8 billion cubic meters annually, Thailand, currently capable of handling 9 million tonnes of LNG, plans to expand to 27 million tonnes. Promphan highlighted the importance of diverse technologies, including hydrogen and ammonia, alongside renewables, to achieve net zero emissions while utilizing existing infrastructure.

Thailand is also exploring carbon capture and storage (CCS) as part of its 2050 net zero goal. Promphan announced the final investment decision on Thailand’s CCS pilot project, aimed at developing shared infrastructure in the eastern seaboard.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul acknowledged the challenge of ensuring energy security while maintaining affordability and transitioning to cleaner energy. He noted the impact of rising energy prices on households and businesses, driven by industrial growth, AI, and data centers.

To support this, he revealed a new program to fund rooftop solar panel installations and tax exemptions for solar equipment starting mid-October.

The Prime Minister also highlighted a surge in investment, with the Board of Investment receiving over 1.4 trillion baht in applications in the first half of the year, representing a 37% increase and the potential for over 82,000 jobs.

He concluded by calling for collaboration through investment, technology, and partnerships, affirming Thailand’s readiness as a trusted partner in the energy transition.
